Did the retired ballplayer knowingly possess the marijuana with intent to distribute it?
The facts
In December 1975, customs agents at the San Juan airport found two parcels and two suitcases of marijuana, about 170 pounds, addressed to a recently retired star first baseman who had just returned from Colombia. He loaded one parcel into his car and called a friend to take the other. After arrest he made statements over about seven hours before seeing a magistrate. He later said he had agreed to pick up only a few pounds for personal use.
