Chicago National League Ball Club, Inc. v. Vincent (1992)

Charge: Suit to block the commissioner's order moving the club to another division (claim that he exceeded his authority)Court: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of IllinoisDocket: The Commissioner's Office

Did the commissioner's 'best interests' power let him move a club to another division without its consent?

The facts

A historic Midwest club played in its league's eastern division. Citing geography, the commissioner ordered it and a regional rival moved to the western division, with two other clubs moving east. The club objected that the league's constitution required its consent before it could be moved to another division. The commissioner relied on his broad power to act in the best interests of baseball. The club went to federal court to stop the switch.
