The Prizefighter's Fists

Commonwealth v. Dorazio (1950)

Charge: Second-degree murderCourt: Supreme Court of PennsylvaniaState: PennsylvaniaDocket: High Crimes

The facts

A former professional heavyweight boxer worked at a brewery. He and a co-worker belonged to rival unions. That morning he threatened other workers, saying he would send one home in an ambulance. After the shift he attacked the co-worker from behind a pillar. The man ran. The boxer chased him, knocked him down and punched him ten to fifteen times about the head as he lay on the ground. The man died of a fractured skull. The boxer says he used only bare fists, so there was no malice and it cannot be murder.
