The Payroll Robbery Murders
Commonwealth v. Sacco (1926)
Charge: Murder (two killings during an armed payroll robbery)Court: Massachusetts Supreme Judicial CourtState: MassachusettsDocket: Trial of the Century
The facts
Armed men shot dead a paymaster and a guard carrying about $15,000 in wages for a shoe factory, then fled by car. Weeks later two men were arrested. Both carried guns. Experts said one man's pistol fired the bullet that killed the guard. The other had a revolver said to be the guard's. Witnesses placed them near the scene, and both lied to police. They say they carried guns and lied because, as political radicals, they feared arrest and deportation.
