The Stranded Radio Announcer

D'Aquino v. United States (1951)

Charge: Treason (enemy propaganda broadcasts)Court: U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Cir.State: CaliforniaDocket: Treason

The facts

An American-born woman went to the enemy country to study shortly before war broke out, and stayed through the war despite trying to come home. She worked as an announcer on an enemy radio show aimed at American troops in the Pacific, taking part in about 340 programmes. In one broadcast she told listeners they had lost all their ships and asked how they would ever get home. She says she acted out of fear of harm, and that prisoners of war helped undermine the show.
