De Jonge v. Oregon (1937)
Charge: Criminal syndicalism — helping to conduct a meeting of an organisation said to advocate violent overthrow of governmentCourt: U.S. Supreme CourtState: OregonDocket: The Red Scare
The facts
A man helped run a public meeting called by a communist organisation to protest against police raids and shootings during a dock strike. Between one and three hundred people came. The meeting itself was orderly. Nothing unlawful was urged, said or done there. But a state criminal syndicalism law made it a crime to help conduct any meeting held by a group that advocates violent overthrow of government. He was convicted and sentenced to seven years.
You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
