Did the Speaker illegally use his offices to bring money and business to his own companies?
The facts
Mike Hubbard was Speaker of the Alabama House and chairman of the state Republican Party. Prosecutors said he used those positions to seek about $2.3 million in work, investments and financial favors from lobbyists and business owners with matters before the Legislature, including consulting deals for his own companies. He was charged with 23 felony ethics counts. Hubbard testified that the transactions were lawful business dealings covered by ethics-law exemptions for ordinary business and longtime personal relationships.
