The facts

On January 24, 1987, the night clerk at the Anderson Motel in Cullman, Alabama, was shot once in the temple during a robbery; about $350 was taken from the register and $60 from his wallet. A man and woman found in the getaway car first said they had been kidnapped, but later agreed to testify against the accused in exchange for pleading guilty to lesser offences. The accused gave police a statement after lengthy questioning. There was no physical evidence showing who pulled the trigger.
