A Father Shelters His Son
Haupt v. United States (1947)
Charge: Treason (aiding an enemy saboteur)Court: U.S. Supreme CourtState: IllinoisDocket: Treason
The facts
A man born in the enemy country, now a citizen, was charged with treason in wartime. His grown son had secretly come back as an enemy saboteur. The father let the son stay in his home, helped him get his old factory job back, and went with him to buy a car and paid for it. The father says these were ordinary things any parent might do. He argues he meant only to help his son, not to hurt his country.
