The facts
A lawyer was in a federal courtroom when the judge ruled against him. The judge told a marshal to remove a woman from the room. The lawyer beat the marshal with his fists and came at him with a deadly weapon. There was no charge, no notice and no hearing. The judge found him in contempt then and there and sent him to jail for six months. He argued that a court cannot punish a man without notice, a trial or a jury.
