Oregon v. Mathiason (1977)

Charge: First-degree burglaryCourt: U.S. Supreme CourtState: OregonDocket: You Have the Right

The facts

Police were investigating a burglary. An officer left a card at a man's apartment asking him to call. Weeks later he called and agreed to meet at a state patrol office two blocks away. He was told at once he was not under arrest. Behind a closed door, the officer falsely said his fingerprints had been found at the scene. Within five minutes he confessed. Only then was he warned of his rights. Afterward he left freely. He says he should have been warned first.

You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
