The Orchard Graves

People v. Corona (1989)

Charge: Twenty-five counts of first-degree murderCourt: California Court of Appeal, First District (retrial in Alameda County Superior Court)State: CaliforniaDocket: Trial of the Century

The facts

A farm labor contractor was charged with murdering twenty-five men, all migrant farm workers. The bodies were found buried on two ranches. Most had chop or hacking wounds to the head and were laid out in a similar way. No one saw any killing. A ledger in the contractor's handwriting listed names of some of the dead. Receipts bearing his name and bloodstained items were found at the burial sites. The defence says another man, the accused's half-brother, was the real killer.
