The Ump Who Wrestled Back

People v. Eric Dybas (2003)

Charge: Aggravated battery (and criminal trespass) - rushing the field and tackling an umpireCourt: Circuit Court of Cook County, IllinoisDocket: Foul Territory

Was the fan guilty of aggravated battery on the umpire?

The facts

In April 2003, a 24-year-old fan who said he had drunk about a dozen large beers at two ballgames that day ran onto the field during a game in Chicago. He grabbed the first-base umpire, who was tracking a fly ball, and tried to wrestle him to the ground. The umpire, a former Marine, held him until team personnel helped subdue him. The fan said he only wanted to get a rise out of the crowd. He was charged with felony aggravated battery.

You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
