The Commune Leader's Two Nights
People v. Manson (1976)
Charge: Seven counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murderCourt: California Court of Appeal, Second District (from Los Angeles County Superior Court)State: CaliforniaDocket: Trial of the Century
The facts
A commune leader was charged with seven murders and conspiracy. Over two nights, members of his group entered two homes and killed seven people, writing words in blood at the scenes. He killed no one himself. On the first night he was not there; he had told a follower to go and do what another member said. On the second night he entered the house, tied up the couple, told the women not to let the victims know they would die, and left before the killing. The prosecution says he ordered it all.
