The Hotel Fire Server

People v. Marin (1984)

Charge: Murder (26 counts) and arsonCourt: New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second DepartmentState: New YorkDocket: Trial by Fire

The facts

A fire at a hotel conference center killed many people. The accused worked there setting up coffee for meetings. He gave police different stories, first saying he helped people escape, then admitting he lied. He said he dropped a lit can of cooking fuel, put it out, later saw fire and fled without warning anyone. Prosecutors said he used gasoline to start the fire so he could play the hero and keep a job that was ending. No one saw him set it. The evidence was all indirect.
