People v. Mooney (1918)
Charge: First-degree murder for a suitcase bomb set off during a public paradeCourt: Supreme Court of California, on appeal from the Superior Court, City and County of San FranciscoState: CaliforniaDocket: Labor Wars
The facts
A man was accused of leaving a suitcase packed with dynamite on a downtown sidewalk during a large public parade. The bomb killed ten people in the crowd and injured forty or fifty more. He denied being at the spot and said the state's two key eyewitnesses were lying. The trial ran thirteen days and the jury heard 154 witnesses. If the jury believed those two witnesses placed him there with the suitcase, the state's case was made.
