The Clubhouse Stash

People v. Samuels (2012)

Charge: Criminal possession of stolen property and criminal tax fraud - longtime clubhouse manager accused of taking team memorabiliaCourt: New York State court, Queens CountyDocket: Off the Bench

Is a longtime clubhouse manager guilty of possessing stolen property for a stash of team gear and memorabilia he kept after leaving the job?

The facts

For decades a man ran the home clubhouse and equipment room for a New York big-league club. After he was fired in 2010, investigators found a huge stash of team gear in a friend's basement in Connecticut: hundreds of jerseys, more than 800 bats, hats, batting helmets and equipment bags, including a full set of autographed uniforms from a championship season. The items were valued at about $2.3 million. Queens prosecutors charged him with possessing stolen property and with tax fraud.
