Paying the College Players
People v. Sollazzo (1951)
Charge: Bribery of participants in an amateur gameCourt: New York Court of General Sessions, New York County (trial court)State: New YorkDocket: The Fix
The facts
A man was accused of handing money to players in college basketball games so that he could be sure how those games would turn out. He was indicted in a state court on several counts. The law he was charged under makes it a crime to bribe someone taking part in an amateur sporting contest. He later argued that the indictment never properly set out what he was supposed to have done. The players were amateurs, not professionals.
You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
