The Friend on the Force

Spano v. New York (1959)

Charge: First-degree murderCourt: U.S. Supreme CourtState: New YorkDocket: You Have the Right

The facts

After a former boxer beat him in a bar dispute, a 25-year-old man got a gun and shot the boxer dead. Later he surrendered to police. Officers questioned him through the night for about eight hours, in turns, and refused his request to contact his lawyer. They had his childhood friend, a new police officer, falsely tell him his phone call had put the friend's job and family at risk. After four such pleas, he confessed. The law bars confessions where the will was overborne.

You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
