Yellow Light, Red Light
State of Florida v. James Leyritz (2010)
Charge: DUI manslaughter (felony) over a fatal intersection crashCourt: Circuit Court, Broward County, FloridaDocket: Players in the Dock
Could the state prove that the former player's impairment caused the crash that killed the other driver?
The facts
A retired World Series hero was driving home from a night out with friends in the early morning hours. At an intersection his SUV collided with another car, and the other driver, a 30-year-old woman, was killed. A blood test taken some time later showed an alcohol level above the legal limit. The defense said his level may have been under the limit at the moment of the crash and that the test timing made it unreliable. Witnesses could not agree on whether he had run a red light.
You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
