State v. Harrington (1969)

Charge: Threatening to accuse another of a crime with intent to extort moneyCourt: Supreme Court of VermontState: VermontDocket: House Deck

The facts

A lawyer took on a wife's divorce for a share of whatever settlement she won. He hired a woman to seduce the husband and had photographs taken of the pair. He then sent the husband a letter marked personal and confidential. It demanded a large sum, enclosed a photograph, and said he had all the proof needed to prove adultery. It warned of public divorce proceedings if he refused, and hinted at reports to the tax authorities about his finances. He was charged with threatening to accuse another of a crime to extort money.
