The Drag Race

State v. McFadden (1982)

Charge: Involuntary manslaughter (two counts)Court: Supreme Court of IowaState: IowaDocket: Chain Reaction

The facts

Two drivers raced each other down a city street at 60 to 80 miles an hour, playing cat and mouse and blocking each other from passing. Beyond the crest of a hill the other racer lost control, crossed the median and hit an oncoming car. That crash killed the other racer and a passenger riding in the car he hit. The accused's car never touched either vehicle. He says he cannot be blamed for deaths caused by another driver's loss of control, and that the other racer chose that risk himself.
