Two Deaths in a Small-Town Hospital
State v. Naramore (1998)
Charge: Attempted first-degree murder and first-degree murder of two patientsCourt: Kansas Court of AppealsState: KansasDocket: Bad Medicine
The facts
A small-town doctor treated two elderly patients in the same month. One, a 78-year-old woman dying of cancer, was in severe pain; he gave her a sedative and a strong painkiller, and her breathing slowed sharply. When he prepared morphine, her family objected and he stopped. She died days later. The other, an 81-year-old man, collapsed; after three hours trying to revive him, the doctor gave a paralysing drug and stopped the ventilator. The doctor says all of this was proper medical care. Some doctors agree with him; some do not.
You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
