Death at the Corner Grocery

State v. Schulz (2026)

Charge: First-degree premeditated murder - fatal attack on a grocery-store cashierCourt: Minnesota District Court, Fourth Judicial District (Hennepin County)Docket: The Little Dancer

Was the defendant criminally responsible for the killing, or did mental illness prevent him from knowing the nature of his act or that it was wrong?

The facts

In December 2023 a Minneapolis man walked into a neighborhood grocery across the street from his apartment and attacked the 66-year-old cashier, a retired professional dancer who had spent a decade with Kansas City Ballet. The two were strangers. The attacker punched and choked him, struck him repeatedly with a golf club until it broke, and stabbed him with the broken shaft. Police found the suspect after a six-hour standoff, trying to wash bloody clothing. Three independent psychological evaluations then examined his mental state at the time of the killing.
