The Meat on the Loading Dock

Topolewski v. State (1906)

Charge: LarcenyCourt: Wisconsin Supreme CourtState: WisconsinDocket: Sticky Fingers

The facts

A meat-packing company suspected a man wanted to steal from it. It sent a go-between to talk with him. The man proposed a plan: barrels of meat would be left on the company's loading platform for him to collect. The go-between agreed, posing as an accomplice but really working for the company. A company employee packed the barrels, put them on the platform, and told the platform boss they were for a man who would call. The man drove up and took three barrels. His defence: the company handed the goods over.
