United States v. Auernheimer (2014)
Charge: Conspiracy to violate the federal computer fraud law, and identity fraudCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third CircuitState: New JerseyDocket: System Breach
The facts
A man and another person found that a phone company's website would hand back a customer's email address to anyone who supplied the right device serial number. They built a program to run through serial numbers automatically, and it collected about 114,000 email addresses of tablet owners over four days. He then gave the list to a reporter and publicised the flaw. He was tried in a state where neither man had been, and where the company's servers were not.
