Shares In Two Shell Companies

United States v. Belfort (2018)

Charge: Conspiracy to defraud the United States, money laundering and securities manipulationCourt: E.D.N.Y.State: New YorkDocket: The Con

The facts

A stockbroker and a partner took control of shares in two small public companies. The shares were issued cheaply to offshore entities that were falsely described as foreign owned. They opened secret Swiss bank accounts and smuggled cash out of the country. Customers were then steered into the shares to push up demand, and the hidden stock was sold back into the market at a profit. The money came home through the foreign accounts.
