Charge: Lacey Act & witness retaliationCourt: U.S. District Court, S.D. AlabamaState: AlabamaDocket: The Black Market
Did the fisherman unlawfully sell protected reef fish and then retaliate against the person who reported him?
The facts
A commercial fisherman took and sold Gulf reef fish, mostly red snapper, worth about $10,600, outside the rules that govern the fishery. Someone had given investigators information about him. He then posted messages on a social network aimed at that person, threatening physical violence. He was charged both with the fish offenses and with retaliating against a witness.
