United States v. Busic (1978)
Charge: Air piracy resulting in death; air piracy; conspiracy to commit air piracyCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (trial: E.D.N.Y.)State: New YorkDocket: Air Piracy
The facts
Five people hijacked a passenger jet flying between two big cities. They said they had bombs on the plane and had left another in a locker at a busy railway station. They demanded that newspapers print statements calling for independence for their homeland. Police found the locker bomb. As officers tried to take it apart, it exploded, killing one officer and injuring another. Thirty hours later the plane landed safely in Europe. The leader and his wife are charged with air piracy resulting in death, which requires proof that a death resulted from the hijacking.
