Six Hundred Kilos

United States v. Chomicz (2004)

Charge: Conspiracy to smuggle caviarCourt: U.S. District CourtState: FloridaDocket: The Black Market

How much of a smuggling ring's total haul should be laid at the door of one of the people who organized it?

The facts

The head of a European roe company bought protected sturgeon roe on the black market at home and hired couriers to fly it into this country in their luggage. Others in the ring met the couriers in Florida and put them up in hotels. In all the conspiracy moved more than fifteen hundred kilos. About six hundred kilos of that, worth close to two million dollars, was traced to this Defendant.
