The facts
A lawyer who worked for a wealthy businessman turned presidential candidate faces eight charges. Over five years he is said to have hidden more than four million dollars of income from the tax authorities, and to have lied to a bank about a large line of credit to get a home loan. Just before the election he arranged payments to two women so they would not tell stories about the candidate: one through a media company, one through a shell company. Prosecutors say those payments were illegal campaign contributions meant to influence the election.
