The Official's Job Talks
United States v. Druyun (2004)
Charge: Conspiracy to commit acts affecting a personal financial interest (conflict of interest in negotiating employment)Court: U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia (Alexandria)State: VirginiaDocket: False Claims
The facts
The accused was a senior civilian official who ran weapons buying for a branch of the armed forces. While still in that job, she negotiated for a job with a large aircraft maker that was competing for her agency's contracts. Prosecutors say she favoured that company in certain contract negotiations because of the job talks and other favours it gave her. They also say she gave false and misleading answers when investigators questioned her. Federal law bars an official from acting on matters in which she has a personal financial interest.
