Money to Hide an Affair
United States v. Edwards (2012)
Charge: Conspiracy, accepting illegal campaign contributions, and concealing them from the election regulatorCourt: U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North CarolinaState: North CarolinaDocket: The People's Trust
The facts
A former senator was running for president. Two wealthy supporters paid out more than $900,000 for the living costs, medical bills, travel and hiding places of a woman he had been having an affair with, who was pregnant by him. Prosecutors said that money was really a campaign contribution, because keeping the affair quiet kept the campaign alive, so the legal limits and the reporting rules applied to it. He said it was private help from friends to spare his family, not campaign money at all.
