The facts

A foreign businessman ran a company that supplied and serviced navy warships when they called at ports in Asia. Prosecutors say he gave navy officers cash, first-class travel, luxury hotels, lavish dinners, prostitutes and gifts such as designer handbags, watches and cigars. In return, they say, officers handed him secret ship schedules, rival companies' bids and news of investigations into his firm. He then overbilled the navy for fuel, tugboats and sewage disposal. He is charged with bribery, conspiracy and fraud.
