Charge: Conspiracy, computer fraud, wire fraud, access device fraud and aggravated identity theftCourt: U.S. District Court, D. Mass.State: MassachusettsDocket: System Breach
The facts
A young man led a ring that broke into the computer systems of big retail chains. They drove around with laptops hunting for shop wireless networks that were not properly secured, got inside, and planted programs that captured card details as customers paid. More than forty million credit and debit card numbers were taken. The numbers were sold on, or burned onto blank cards and used to withdraw cash from machines. The proceeds were moved through anonymous online currencies and foreign bank accounts.
