The Railway Station Shooting

United States v. Guiteau (1882)

Charge: MurderCourt: Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, General TermState: District of ColumbiaDocket: Insanity on Trial

The facts

A man walked up to the President in a railway station and shot him with a pistol. The President lingered for weeks and died in another state. The accused is charged with murder. He says he is not guilty because he was insane: he did not know what he did was wrong. His lawyers also want the jury told that a man who cannot resist a wrongful impulse is not guilty. And they argue the court cannot try him for murder at all, because the death happened outside its territory.

You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
