Breach of a Private Intelligence Firm

United States v. Hammond (2013)

Charge: Conspiracy to engage in computer hacking (federal computer fraud)Court: U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New YorkState: New YorkDocket: System Breach

The facts

A man linked to an online hacking collective broke into the computer systems of a private intelligence company. He took staff emails and account details for about 860,000 subscribers and clients. He also took card details for roughly 60,000 cardholders, and some of that data was used to run up more than $700,000 in unauthorised charges. He admitted taking part in other intrusions too, including ones hitting federal and state law enforcement systems, after which officers' home addresses were published.
