The Prize He Never Declared

United States v. Hatch (2008)

Charge: Tax evasion and filing false tax returnsCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals, First Circuit (trial court: D.R.I.)State: Rhode IslandDocket: The Taxman

The facts

A man won about a million dollars in cash, plus a car, as the winner of a televised survival contest. He did not put the prize on his tax return. Prosecutors say he also left out rental income from a property, several hundred thousand dollars of radio show fees paid into his own company, and donations meant for his charity that he spent on himself. His accountants prepared a return showing the prize. He filed a different one instead.
