The Church's Secret Agents
United States v. Heldt (1981)
Charge: Conspiracy to obstruct justiceCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. CircuitState: District of ColumbiaDocket: True Believers
The facts
Senior officials of a church ran a secret office that treated some government agencies as enemies. Prosecutors said members got jobs inside the tax agency and the justice department using false papers. They copied confidential files about the church and hid listening devices in a tax-agency meeting room. When caught, they allegedly hid a wanted member and lied to a grand jury. The accused, a top official, agreed to be tried on a written record. She argued the search of church offices was an illegal general search.
