Loans From The Lawyers
United States v. Holzer (1987)
Charge: Extortion; mail fraud; racketeeringCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals, 7th Cir.State: IllinoisDocket: The Bench on Trial
The facts
Over about seventeen years a county judge asked lawyers with cases in front of him, and court-appointed receivers he had chosen himself, to lend him money. He took in roughly two hundred thousand dollars this way and repaid almost none of it. He did not disclose the loans where he was required to. He said they were genuine loans between businessmen, not payments for rulings, and that he had never decided a case because of the money.
