The facts
A software engineer had worked for years at a large maker of telephone equipment. She downloaded thousands of internal company documents stamped proprietary, describing a two-way radio phone system the company had spent heavily to develop. Customs officers stopped her at the airport as she was about to fly to another country. She had the documents with her and about thirty-one thousand dollars in cash. She faced two charges: stealing trade secrets, and stealing them to benefit a foreign government. A judge decided the case.
