The Cabin Bomber's Plea
United States v. Kaczynski (2001)
Charge: Transporting and mailing explosive devices with intent to kill; using destructive devices in crimes of violenceCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Cir.State: CaliforniaDocket: Blowback
The facts
For years a man mailed and delivered home-made bombs to universities, airlines and businesses. Three people died and many others were hurt. Facing the death penalty, he clashed with his own lawyers, who wanted to argue he was mentally ill. He refused to be painted that way and asked to represent himself. The judge said the request came too late and was a stalling tactic. Right after that ruling, the man pleaded guilty in exchange for the government dropping the death penalty. He now says his plea was forced and not voluntary.
You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
