The facts
A senior on a college basketball team agreed to help a gambling operation. The deal was that he would hold his own team's winning margin below the number the bookmakers had set, so bets placed against that number would pay off. Money reached him through middlemen. He was charged under the federal racketeering law, with conspiring to bribe someone taking part in a sporting contest, and with travelling between states to carry the bribery out.
