The facts

A leading engineer on a tech giant's self-driving-car project was preparing to leave. Prosecutors said that before he went he downloaded thousands of confidential project files from a password-protected company drive onto his personal laptop, including a weekly status report on the whole project. He then started his own self-driving truck company, which a ride-hailing firm bought within months. The government said he took the files to benefit himself and his new employer, and put the loss at up to $1.5 million. He faced 33 counts.
