The Leak Investigation Aide

United States v. Libby (2007)

Charge: Obstruction of justice, perjury, false statements to the FBICourt: U.S. District Court for the District of ColumbiaState: District of ColumbiaDocket: Cover-Up

The facts

A senior aide to the Vice President was questioned by federal agents and then by a grand jury. They were investigating who had told reporters that a government critic's wife worked for the spy agency. The aide said he first learned about her from a television journalist, and knew nothing about her when they spoke. Prosecutors say he had learned it earlier from officials and lied to cover that up. His defence is that he did not lie on purpose: he was handling a huge amount of sensitive work and his memory was muddled.
