Insulin on the Night Shift
United States v. Mays (2021)
Charge: Second-degree murder (seven counts); assault with intent to commit murderCourt: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West VirginiaState: West VirginiaDocket: Bad Medicine
The facts
A nursing assistant worked night shifts at a veterans' hospital, often sitting one-on-one with patients. She was not allowed to give medication. Over time, several elderly patients on her ward died of dangerously low blood sugar. Investigators reviewed medical records, dug up bodies for testing, and interviewed more than 300 people. They concluded someone had injected the men with insulin they had never been prescribed. She is charged with the second-degree murder of seven veterans and with trying to kill an eighth, who survived. Murder requires proof she gave the injections intending to cause death.
