The Parachute Ransom

United States v. McCoy (1973)

Charge: Aircraft piracyCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit (trial: D. Utah)State: UtahDocket: Air Piracy

The facts

A passenger jet flying between two western cities was hijacked. The hijacker forced it to land, where half a million dollars in cash and parachutes were loaded on board. The plane took off again and he jumped out over open country with the money. Agents got a warrant and searched a man's home. He says the search was illegal: the warrant rested on second- and third-hand hearsay, and it named the wrong agent as the person who swore to the facts. If the search was unlawful, the evidence found must be thrown out.

You have the facts the court had. Guilty or not guilty? Call it in the game with your friends, then see what the court actually decided. Wrong call, you drink.
