The Doped Racehorses
United States v. Navarro (2021)
Charge: Conspiracy to commit drug adulteration and misbrandingCourt: U.S. District Court, S.D.N.Y.State: New YorkDocket: The Fix
The facts
A leading racehorse trainer was accused of secretly doping the horses in his care. Prosecutors said he imported mislabelled drugs and gave his horses performance boosters, including 'blood building' drugs that can strain a horse's heart. He timed the doses so racing officials' tests would not pick them up. He took prize money and higher training fees from the wins. The law here punishes handling drugs that are falsely labelled or tampered with, not cruelty to the animals.
