The Mail Train Ambush

United States v. Newton (1924)

Charge: Robbery of the United States mailCourt: U.S. District Court, N.D. Ill.State: IllinoisDocket: The Heist

The facts

Masked men boarded a mail train at a country crossing and forced the driver to stop. They used gas on the clerks and carried off dozens of mail pouches holding more than two million dollars. The job was set up by an inside man in the postal service who knew which train was carrying the money. During the raid one of the gang was shot five times by his own partner, who mistook him for a postal worker. The wounded man was traced, and the rest were rounded up.
