The Untested Weapon Parts
United States v. Northrop Corp. (1990)
Charge: Making false statements to the government (falsified test data on weapons components)Court: U.S. District Court, Central District of CaliforniaState: CaliforniaDocket: False Claims
The facts
A large defence contractor built components for a cruise missile and a military jump-jet. Prosecutors say the company certified to the government that the parts had passed required tests when the tests were never properly run or the results were made up. It was indicted on more than 170 counts of making false statements, plus conspiracy. Federal law requires proof the statements were made knowingly and willfully. Two company vice-presidents were also charged over allegedly defective missile guidance parts.
